چکیده

Article history: Received 14 March 2008 Received in revised form 24 July 2008 Accepted 14 October 2008 A strong relationship between Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and high-frequency (HF) atmospheric variability in the low-level zonal wind is reported in the present study. We found that the HF atmospheric variability over the Indian Ocean (IO) is strongly modulated by IOD events, that is, HF atmospheric variability becoming significantly energetic during negative IOD events. This relation still holds even after the ENSO effect is statistically removed. Our results suggest that the HF atmospheric variability is state-dependent on the IOD coupled system. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that there is a significant decadal change in this dependence. That is, the dependency of HF atmospheric activity on the IOD phase has become stronger in the recent decade. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Multidecadal Indian Ocean Variability Linked to the Pacific and Implications for Preconditioning Indian Ocean Dipole Events

The Indian Ocean has sustained robust surface warming in recent decades, but the role of multidecadal variability remains unclear. Using ocean model hindcasts, characteristics of low-frequency Indian Ocean temperature variations are explored. Simulated upper-ocean temperature changes across the IndianOcean in the hindcast are consistent with those recorded in observational products and ocean re...

Ocean Currents Modeling along the Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea and the Northern Indian Ocean

The Makran Coast (Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea on the Northern Indian Ocean) plays an important role in country’s future navigation and trade due to its accessibility. In 2014, the Iranian Makran coastline was selected by the PMO to be studied as the Phase 6 in the series of Monitoring and Modelling Studies of Iranian Coasts with all disciplines being in investigated including currents. Al...

A multi-model analysis of the role of the ocean on the African and Indian monsoon during the mid-Holocene

We investigate the role of the ocean feedback on the climate in response to insolation forcing during the mid-Holocene (6,000 year BP) using results from seven coupled ocean–atmosphere general circulation models. We examine how the dipole in late summer seasurface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical Atlantic increases the length of the African monsoon, how this dipole structure is creat...

Impact of Indian Ocean Sea Surface Temperature on Developing

Prior to the 1976–77 climate shift (1950–76), sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical Indian Ocean consisted of a basinwide warming during boreal fall of the developing phase of most El Niños, whereas after the shift (1977–99) they had an east–west asymmetry—a consequence of El Niño being associated with the Indian Ocean Dipole/Zonal mode. In this study, the possible impact of t...

Interannual Rainfall Extremes over Southwest Western Australia Linked to Indian Ocean Climate Variability

Interannual rainfall extremes over southwest Western Australia (SWWA) are examined using observations, reanalysis data, and a long-term natural integration of the global coupled climate system. The authors reveal a characteristic dipole pattern of Indian Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies during extreme rainfall years, remarkably consistent between the reanalysis fields and the coupl...
